We have Scottish Highland / Irish Dexter cross cattle for sale.
Bulls and Heifers available, ranging from @ 1month - 4 yrs old.
Starting at $ 500 , depending on age
Scottish Highland and Irish Dexter are the smallest natural cattle, we have found both the breeds to be quite similar and a wonderful cross. They are more docile than most any other breed of cattle. Very easy keepers.
They require little shelter, feed supplements, or grains to achieve and maintain good condition. Hot, cold weather and snow have little effect on them. They are hearty with the ability to thrive in less than ideal circumstances, outstanding mothering instincts, longevity (can breed up to 20 yrs or so), and very low calf mortality, good for milking, they are in demand for todays market. Known the thrive under climatic conditions where most of our popular breeds would suffer. They are raised as far north as Alaska and the Scandinavian countries. They adapt well in southern climates. Despite long horns they are very even-tempered, bulls as well as cows making them a joy to have around.
Our cattle are strictly grass fed, they are not confined, fed hormones, antibiotics or pesticides. This is very sought out in todays market with consumers preferring lean, premium meat, this beef is ideally suited. The beef from our heard is lean, well marbled and flavorful with little outside waste fat. Highland beef has graded in the top of their respective classes at the prestigious National Western Stock Show around the country. In the British Isles, this beef is recognized as the finest available and fetches premium prices. The British Royal family keeps a large head of its own, this is the only beef the Queen will eat.
A bit of information on the beef we raise;
Highland cattle have a rich, beefy taste, and our cattle are entirely grass fed, their meat is significantly higher in Omega 3's, Omega 6's, CLA's (conjugated linoleum acids)1, vitamins and minerals. The meat is very lean and low in cholesterol. When tested in a commercial lab comparisons were done with Highland / cross grass fed sirloin steak. The cholesterol count, which was measured in mg/100g, was 23.4. This compares to 77.0 in lean red meat, 72.0 in chicken, 70.0 in venison, 50.0 in codfish and 40.0 in buffalo. (numbers adapted from the National Cholesterol Education Program Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program Expert Panel on Detection Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults). The fat percentage on the same meat sample was vary low at 4.5%.
This cattle is a great way to produce a fine cut of beef with as little effort and expense as possible.
Our children have played with them like pets very friendly breed. They would make great 4-h projects.
The Highland is a unique and beautiful animal... truly "the breed apart."
